Konza Tech Hub's COVID-19 Innovation Challenge Winners Are...

Kenya's Silicon Valley, Konza Technopolis in partnership with UNDP Kenya and Countrywide innovation hubs, gave an opportunity to many innovators to showcase their diverse innovations aimed at addressing the needs and challenges arising from the COVID-19 crisis. 

'The great COVID-19 Innovation Challenge' which ran from April 27, culminating on May 19, 2020, was a hackathon aimed at harnessing the creativity and innovation of Kenyans under three thematic areas of - Health Systems Innovation, Food Systems Innovation and Dignified Work. 

It had a wide reach with submissions from as far as Nyeri, Homabay, Mombasa, Isiolo just to name a few and facilitators from Kenya, South Africa and Germany. 

316 innovations were submitted from 47 counties. 53% on Health Systems Innovation for COVID-19, 28% on Dignified Work and 19% on Food Systems. 

  • Startup Suite 

The overall winner of the challenge was team Startup Suite from Brainverse.

A platform that seeks to remove the hustle of managing remote teams for Small and Micro Enterprises.

It allows startups run their operations seamlessly while working from home. 

They walked away with technical support worth Kshs. 500,000.

  • Zinake 

In second place was Zinake, a cloud-based platform that connects temporary workers to job opportunities. 

  • Ukulima Tech

Overall 3rd place was Garden Fresh which provides a year-round food growing solution to help boost urban food production. 

A further 15 teams are to be hosted at Konza hub free of charge as part of the Ministry of ICT's commitment to support innovation in the technology sector. 

All the top 10 teams join an accelation program to ensure their innovations can meet the demands of end-users. 

In addition, all hackathon participating teams received a free of cost training in Introduction to Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber Security courtesy of CISCO.
