Coronavirus in Africa Tracker: How many tests so far?

There is a general consensus that testing rates in Africa are woefully low, and this could be distorting our understanding of how far the virus has spread.

Across Africa, the average number of tests per one million people was 1,669 because of a worldwide shortage of kits, compared with 173,029 in Iceland, 44,123 in the US and 31,592 in the UK.

South Africa is the continent's coronavirus testing giant.

1,328,060 - tests conducted in South Africa as of June 21, by far the highest in Africa.

6,024 - highest number of tests Kenya has conducted in a day (announced on June 18), also the leading number in the region.

8,597 - tests per one million people in Rwanda, the highest in the East African Community.

Uganda has conducted 3,142 tests, Kenya 2,606, South Sudan 878, and Burundi 32 for every one million people in the country.

551 - tests per one million people in Nigeria, one of the lowest among countries with the highest number of infections.

South Africa has tested 22,400, Morocco 14,379 and Ghana 8,608 for every one million people.

The Africa Centers of Disease Prevention and Control has been leading a continental effort to raise funds and procure supplies.

Under an initiative called the Partnership to Accelerate Covid-19 Testing (PACT) it is supporting countries with the aim of carrying out between 10 million and 15 million tests across the continent - covering about 1% of the population.
