Governors Unanimously Re-Elect Martin Wambora as Council's Chairperson

The Council of Governors (CoG) have agreed to retain Embu governor Martin Wambora as its chairperson.

At the same time, Kisii governor James Ongwae and Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Alex Tolgos were also re-elected in a consensus on Thursday, January 27 to continue serving as vice-chair and whip respectively.

"I am greatly humbled by the trust and confidence bestowed on me by my fellow brothers and sisters. I am honoured to provide leadership and direction for yet another term," Wambora said.

The governors also elected new committee members. The team brings together the Executive and the chairpersons of all committees.

Wambora was first elected in January 2021 to take over from Kakamega county chief Wycliffe Oparanya who retained the position for two terms.

At that time, Wambora floored Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu) and Salim Mvirya of Kwale to clinch the prestigious position.

Former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto was the first chair of CoG in 2013 and served up to 2015.

He passed the baton to former Meru governor Peter Munya who led the council until 2017.

In the run-up to the 2017 General Election, Turkana governor Japhet Nanok was elected to chair the council.

After the polls, there was a plot to replace him with Mvurya but a deal was later brokered to allow the Turkana county boss to complete his term.

The CoG chair enjoys an array of privileges such as a standby chopper for official functions and unfettered access to the top leadership of the National Executive.

The office-bearers also get a chance to build their political careers by moving a notch higher to attain the image of national leaders.
