Raila Odinga vs William Ruto: First to Name Running Mate Will Be Politically Disadvantaged, Herman Manyora

A move by Deputy President William Ruto and ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi to revive their working relationship has continued to elicit varied reactions in the political space.

The latest pundit to weigh in on the re-union is the political analyst Herman Manyora who observed that Ruto is the biggest casualty of the said earthquake.

Through his YouTube channel on Saturday, January 29, Manyora listed several reasons to qualify that the union will impede the second in command in his statehouse race.

They include:

1. Power sharing

The university don said Mudavadi's earthquake demolished Ruto's campaign platform.

For some time now, the DP has been running on the narrative that his competitors' agenda is to share positions while he fashioned himself as the only candidate who has the interests of Kenyans at heart.

2. Coalition with other parties

Manyora said the hustler narrative has been about creating one strong unitary party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which will have a national image.

Ruto has been on record campaigning against tribal groupings. However, the entry of Mudavadi and Weta, the perceived Luhya kingpins, seemingly contradicts the DP's previous ideology.

3. Flag-bearer

The linguistics scholar said following the UDA, ANC and Ford Kenya union, the coalition has brought Ruto problems he did not have before.

The hustler nation, Manyora said, is not sure who will be the flag bearer of their rumoured Kenya Kwanza coalition.

He said the moment they will announce that Ruto is the flag bearer, the DP will lose the support he was getting from Mudavadi and his allies and are likely to ditch him.

4. Running mate issue

The political analyst said the running mate stalemate worsened on Ruto's side immediately after he united with Mudavadi and the Bungoma senator.

5. Dynasties campaign strategy

Manyora also said following the union, Ruto can no longer sell the hustlers versus dynasties message since Mudavadi belongs to the same cluster (dynasties).

Initially, the Jubilee deputy party leader had described himself as a nobody, son of a poor man who has risen from grass to grace.

On many occasions, he linked President Uhuru Kenyatta, Raila and Mudavadi to dynasties, arguing they occupy their political positions not because of hard work but courtesy of influential positions their fathers had in previous administrations.

For these reasons, Manyora said Ruto was sitting on a pin.

The analyst advised the second in command to end his pact with Mudavadi and Wetang'ula in order to survive.
