Moment of Betrayal: Mass Defections Expected as Party Hopping Window Closes in 5 Days

Political defections have been playing in the background for the last few weeks signalling mistrust and impending major fallouts ahead of the August General Election.

The trend is expected to scale up this week, after the Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu set Saturday, March 26, 2022, as the deadline for parties to submit their membership list.

According to Nderitu, the list of aspirants vying for elective posts in the 2022 General Elections should be submitted to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), 14 days after filing.

Nderitu said the Election Act and Political Parties Act requires IEBC to have all parties' membership register 120 days to elections. This means the membership registers should be with the electoral body by April 9.

To ensure that IEBC has sufficient time to properly document each parties register, all outfits are supposed to submit their registers 12 days to April 9, which is on or before March 26.

“The Elections Act requires IEBC to have the parties’ membership register 120 days to the elections. That will be April 9. Before then, the law requires the Registrar to have the registers 14 days before IEBC gets them. If you look at the timelines, then March 26 is the day we should have the lists before we transfer them to the IEBC,” Nderitu explained.

Nderitu said once all parties have submitted their register, no member will be allowed to move between parties unless they vie on independent tickets, whose deadline is slated for May 9, 2022.
