MCK Demands Arrest of Goons Who Attacked Journalists at ODM Headquarters

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has called on the authorities to take legal action against attackers of journalists who were undertaking their duties at ODM party headquarters in Nairobi.

Moses Nyamori, attached to the Standard Group and Radio Africa's Luke Awich, were on Thursday, March 24, attacked by the unidentified goons as they covered the outfit's function presided over by former prime minister Raila Odinga.

According to reports, the two had been identified after allegedly publishing stories that presumably demeaned a section of the party's officials.

The attack on the two journalists prompted MCK's condemnation, further calling on the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to intervene.

The media regulator also asked the ODM leadership to disown the attack and assure journalists of their security whenever they are out to cover the party's events.

"The MCK calls on the ODM leadership led by its leader Raila Odinga who was hosting today's event to disown such acts of violence against the media and commit to non-interference in the work of media workers in all its activities henceforth," partly read the council's statement.

The party, through its Director of Communications Philip Etale, regretted the incident, adding that it will probe the matter and hold responsible the perpetrators.

The party also assured its commitment to ensuring safety for media practitioners showing up in its events.
