William Ruto’s Headache as Allies Battle for UDA Ticket in Bomet Senatorial Contest

Deputy President William Ruto faces an uphill task settling on aspirants to back for various seats in the South Rift turf, with many of his key allies eyeing the same positions.

The aspirants have been angling to attract Ruto’s blessings, seen as a sure way of clinching the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket and winning in the General Election in an area where the party holds sway.

With about five months to the August polls, the aspirants have been seeking the attention of the UDA leader, with some ensuring they attend his events in the region where the second in command enjoys near-fanatical support.

And with Kenyans warming up to the August polls, the race for the Bomet Senatorial race has narrowed down to three of Ruto’s allies.

They include; the incumbent Christopher Lang’at, nominated MP Wilson Sossion and Nairobi-based lawyer Hillary Sigei.

The three are expected to square it out in what is expected to be a tight race.

It should not go without saying that the trio has impressive career backgrounds and is also perceived to be close to the party leadership.

Additionally, they enjoy a sizeable following in their respective home sub-counties.

Lang’at, a former university lecturer, is one of the vocal legislators from the region and was the chairperson of the influential Senate Education committee before he and other Ruto allies were stripped of their parliamentary leadership positions.

The entry of Sossion, a veteran trade unionist, came as a big surprise to Lang’at. But, like his Kericho counterpart Aaron Cheruiyot, they never expected to face a tough challenge in his re-election.

The trio shows equal chances of clinching the UDA ticket, the focus shifts to the April primaries.

While Ruto has stood his ground, maintaining that he has no preferred candidate for any seat, each of them, albeit quietly, claims to be the party’s leader’s favourite.
