Atheists Hit out at UDA Chairman Johnson Muthama

Former Machakos senator Johnstone Muthama during the Kenya Kwanza Alliance campaigns in Kitui urged residents to only vote for religious leaders in the forthcoming elections.

In the Tuesday, March 29, rally, Muthama, who doubles up as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chairman insisted that it is hard to be a Kenyan leader if you are not religious.

However, Atheists in Kenya Society has taken issue with the politician's utterances saying they border religious discrimination, contravening the 2010 Constitution.

Consequently, the organisation wrote to Muthama, demanding a public apology arguing that they find his remarks discriminatory, parochial and intolerant towards the non-religious community.

"The Constitution and other laws and policies prohibit religious discrimination and protect religious freedom including the freedom to practice any religion or belief through worship," read the letter addressed to Muthama in part.

In the letter, which is signed by society's president Harrison Mumia, the non-believers insisted that leadership is not a preserve of the religious.

If anything, Mumia said atheists occupy many leadership positions in Kenya.
