Sabaot Leaders Vow to Push Mt Elgon Secession from Bungoma County after BBI Ruling

A group of Sabaot leaders have vowed to continue with their push to have Mt Elgon secede from Bungoma and have their county.

In 2019, the leaders petitioned the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) steering Committee to include their recommendation to move out of Western Kenya county.

The Sabaot community has been seeking to move out of Bungoma county, citing historical and cultural discrimination.

According to the leaders, they had proposed that the community be governed in their county.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke after the Supreme Court ruling that declared the BBI unconstitutional, Masuti Chemasuet, a community leader, said the community has a right to be administrated whenever they want.

“As a community, we are still pushing on with our bid to have Mt Elgon administered on its own. We shall be moving back to the Senate and the National Assembly to seek redress,” Chemasuet said.

Chemasuet also said that they would move to court to seek an interpretation of Article 199 of the Constitution on the publication of county legislation.

The article states that county legislation does not take effect unless published in Kenya Gazette.

It further states that the National and county legislation may prescribe additional requirements regarding the publication of county legislation.
