William Ruto, Rift Valley Leaders Condemn Violence Meted on Raila Odinga in Uasin Gishu

Deputy President William Ruto has condemned the stoning of Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga's chopper in Uasin Gishu and later motorcade in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet county.

In a statement issued on his Twitter page, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leader described the violence as retrogressive, saying it reverses the gains made in Kenya's democracy.

"Every politician has the right to sell their agenda in every part of the country. We should listen, evaluate their policies and then decide whom to support. Political violence is retrogressive, divisive and tears down our democracy. We condemn and reject it without reservation," Ruto tweeted. 

The host governor Jackson Mandago also waded into the incident calling for the arrest of the suspects.

Mandago insisted that Uasin Gishu was a peaceful county that had invested heavily invested in peacebuilding and cohesion.

"I condemn with the strongest terms possible the act of violence directed at the former Prime Minister Rt Hon Raila Odinga after the burial of Mzee Jackson Kibor. Uasin Gishu is a peaceful county; we will pursue the matter without rest until the perpetrators are all brought to book," he wrote on his Facebook page.

On his part, Elgeyo Marakwet senator Kipchumba Murkomen appealed to the inspector general of Police Hillary Mutyambai to investigate the matter, arrest and charge the culprits.
