Claims Raila Odinga’s Chopper Attackers Had Paramilitary Skills Are Terrifying

While the 2007/08 post-election violence marked the most memorable such epoch in independent Kenya, the 2017 election chaos, as well as the Molo and other tribal clashes in 1992 and 1997, were not any less deadly.

If anything, the politically-instigated tribal clashes in Molo and other parts of the Rift Valley in 1992 had the greatest human cost. At least 5,000 people lost their lives and another 75,000 were displaced.

It is worrying that Kenyans did not learn lessons from the massive bloodletting and continue to incite violence and entertain reckless actions that could plunge the country into civil strife in an instant.

Take, for instance, the attack on ODM leader Raila Odinga’s helicopter in Kabenes, Uasin Gishu county last week.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was on point when he shuddered to think of what could have happened had Raila been injured, or worse, in the attack. His postulation that such an eventuality would have set the country on fire was not far-fetched at all.
