MP Charles Jaguar Faces Backlash after Taking Credit for Copyright Law

Starehe MP Charles Kanyi alias Jaguar took to social media to celebrate after President Uhuru Kenyatta signed into law the Copyright (Amendment) Bill, 2021.

The Copyright act would now see artistes reap up to 52% of earnings collected from ringback tunes up from the initial 16%.

According to section 30(c) of the new Copyright Law, the premium rate service provider shall be entitled to 8.5%, the telecommunication operator 39.5% and the musicians shall be entitled to not less than 52% of the revenue collected from the Skiza tunes.

The Bill was tabled in Parliament by Homa Bay woman representative Gladys Wanga.

However, social media users took issue with Jaguar taking credit for the successful amendments.

The Kigeugeu hit singer had said he was part of the lawmakers, who through various engagements saw the Bill sail through.

Some netizens insisted that the lawmaker had nothing to do with the Bill as it was pushed by Wanga and the Royal Media Services owner SK Macharia.
