Family of Late Nyeri Governor Holds Low-Key Birthday Ceremony to Commemorate Him

The family of the late Nyeri governor Wahome Gakuru has held a low-key birthday ceremony to remember him nearly five years after his demise.

Gakuru died in a grisly road accident at Kabati along the Thika-Sagana highway on the morning of Tuesday, November 2017, while traveling to Nairobi for an interview with a local radio station.

He was accompanied by his bodyguards and personal assistant when his car veered off the road and rammed into a railroad at Kabati area in Murang'a county.

On Monday, April 4, his family gathered at his rural home and celebrated his life in an unusually modest event that was kept off by his former allies and close friends.

A medium-sized cake was placed in the living room of the late politician's house where prayers were held and brief speeches by family members given in his remembrance.

Outside, Gakuru's grave remained abandoned in an open field only fenced with a mesh wire and a wooden cross bearing the names and brief details about the late county boss.

The soil has leveled up and the whole place is now being covered by grass.

Despite being a reputable leader who was celebrated in Mt Kenya for his wealth of experience in economy and planning, Gakuru appears to have been completely forgotten by local and national leaders.

During his burial, speaker after speaker hailed him as a great leader whose vision and plans for Mt Kenya and Kenya at large were unmatched.

The family was promised maximum support but it appears everything was forgotten immediately he was laid to rest.

Close family members intimated to TUKO.co.ke that no single promise has ever been fulfilled since Gakuru was buried.

"We are planning to build his mausoleum in the near future for remembrance," said the source who sought anonymity.

Further, a bodyguard and personal assistant who escaped death by a whisker have never been compensated as promised.

They have been in and out of the courtrooms trying to follow up on the matter but nothing positive has ever come out it nearly five years down the line.
