Alfred Mutua Threatens to Back out Of Azimio

Machakos governor Alfred Mutua has issued a warning to the Azimio la Umoja coalition led by ODM leader Raila Odinga ahead of August polls.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV on Thursday, April 7, the Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader said unless the coalition respects the party's existence, they will be forced to move out.

Maendeleo Chap Chap members held a meeting on Wednesday, April 6, and issued a statement that called for a share and recognition in the Azimio coalition.

The vocal governor hinted at joining Deputy President William Ruto and his Kenya Kwanza brigade, saying they have recently called him and signalled an opportunity to welcome him.

"We have four options; we can decide as a party to move out and continue on our own. We can form a coalition, Mwanzo Mupya and this can be the fourth pillar. There is also an option of joining Kenya Kwanza. I saw a missed call from William Ruto in the morning and his allies like Senator Cherargei have been calling me. this means they have seen an opportunity in welcoming me to their party," said Mutua.

Mutua reiterated that his party deserves respect and warned against being used only to be dumped after the 2022 General Election.

"We want to be treated with respect because we are doing this for Raila Amollo Odinga and we are doing it as a party. We do not want to be tricked and played and then we are not on the ballot and our party just disappears," he said.

Mutua's demands came after former Jubilee party secretary-general Raphael Tuju was appointed executive director of Azimio secretariat.
