Opposition Party Calls for Consultation Meeting Amid Controversy over Finance Bill, 2023

The opposition coalition party, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya, has extended an invitation to Kenyans for a consultation meeting in Nairobi next week. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the way forward following the recent passage of the Finance Bill, 2023, which has sparked controversy. In a joint public statement released on Thursday, Azimio announced that their leaders and supporters will gather at the Kamukunji Grounds on Tuesday, June 27, at 10am to deliberate on their next steps.

According to the statement, Azimio emphasized the history of the Kenyan people coming together to find solutions to their most challenging problems, stating that this time would be no different. The faction, led by Raila Odinga, urged the public to participate in the meeting and collectively determine the kind of life they aspire to live.

Azimio criticized the Kenya Kwanza administration for disregarding the objections raised by Kenyans during the public participation stage of the Finance Bill. They accused the government of imposing its agenda on the people and ignoring their concerns, marking a new era of dictatorship, as per the opposition party's statement. Azimio also claimed that the budget outlined in the Finance Bill primarily benefits the supporters of President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza movement, while neglecting vulnerable Kenyans.

While appreciating the lawmakers who voted against the Bill and advocated for its amendment, Azimio expressed disappointment in those who allegedly succumbed to government pressure. The statement acknowledged that several amendments were secured due to the efforts of MPs and the support of millions of Kenyans. However, Azimio stated that these amendments were insufficient to guarantee the desired quality of life for the Kenyan people.

Azimio called out the MPs who supported a Bill that had been widely rejected by the public, stating that the consequences for their actions would be evident. The opposition party invoked the phrase "mene mene tekel," alluding to the writing on the wall for the current regime, as described in the Bible.
