President William Ruto Approves Salary Increase for Lower Cadre Civil Servants Amid Economic Challenges

President William Ruto has made an announcement stating that the government has given the green light to a proposal from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to raise the monthly earnings of lower-level civil servants.

Speaking during the launch of digital government services at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Friday, President Ruto revealed that the salary increase, ranging from 7% to 10%, will take effect from July 1, 2023. He emphasized that the decision was driven by the current tough economic conditions in the country, aiming to provide relief to the workers. The salary adjustment will apply to government employees below the rank of a Principal Secretary, as well as teachers, police officers, and military personnel.

President Ruto acknowledged the SRC's proposal to increase salaries for various cadres of civil servants and public servants. He stated, "They have recommended an average salary increase of 7% to 10% for civil servants, ranging from office assistants to those serving below the level of Principal Secretaries." In response to the economic situation, the government approved the salary adjustments for other civil servants, commencing on July 1.

However, President Ruto clarified that he rejected a similar proposal from the SRC, which aimed to increase salaries for senior civil servants, including himself, the Deputy President, Cabinet Secretaries, and Members of Parliament, by an average of 14%. This pay raise would have also benefited other state officers such as Principal Secretaries, Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate, Leaders of Majority and Minority, Chief Justice, Judges, Magistrates, Governors, Chairpersons of Constitutional Commissions, and Independent Offices.
