Uhuru Kenyatta Bans Sale of Scrap Metal in Kenya over Increased Vandalism

Tough economic times ahead for scrap metal dealers after President Uhuru Kenyatta announced an immediate ban on the sale of the materials.

In his directive which he issued while speaking in Nyeri on Thursday, January 20, the head of state cited increased cases of vandalism and economic sabotage which he noted was treasonable.

Addressing a graduation parade of 298 cadet officers at the National Police College Main Campus, Uhuru said it was unfortunate scrap metal dealerships have led to massive destruction of public infrastructure such as Kenya Power transmission lines.

"Sabotage as was the case in Naivasha where some people have intentionally unbolted some of our transmission lines and masts to create chaos and havoc. It is clear these are acts of nothing less than economic sabotage which falls as a treasonable act and the law is very clear as how to deal with individuals who commit economic sabotage," he stated.

Consequently, the president directed relevant government agencies to be on the watch out for scrap metal businesses and deal with those responsible.

He said his administration would formulate guidelines and policies that will ensure the materials do not come from vandalised public infrastructure that taxpayers struggled to put up.

"As of today, we will no longer allow the export or buying and selling of any scrap material until we have put in place proper guidelines. We will not allow destroying that which for growth of our country to benefit a few individuals' pockets. The law is very clear," he added.
