Political Bigwigs Fighting to Save Careers as Uhuru Seeks to End Culture of Impunity

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s ruthless war against corruption has triggered an unprecedented scenario over the last four years.

Several prominent politicians are staring at the possibility of being locked out of the upcoming August 9 general election because of corruption charges facing them.

In a largely unprecedented scenario in Kenya’s elections history, at least 14 politicians have been charged with graft and risk being barred from contesting for any elective seat in the upcoming polls if found guilty of the charges.

Article 99 (2) (g) of the Constitution stipulates that a person seeking an elective seat can be disqualified from vying if they are subject to a jail sentence of at least six months as at the date of registration as a candidate or at the date of the election.

Corruption charges attract a penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment, which is far beyond the six months jail term required to bar one from vying.

It is against this backdrop that those charged with graft are banking on the mercy of the courts to survive the impending shocker that could spell doom to their careers.

Leading the pack of those sitting at the edge of their seats ahead of the August polls is Migori Governor Okoth Obado, who is facing corruption and murder charges.
