No Please: Boni Khalwale, Cleophas Malala Aren't Preferred Successors of Governor Oparanya

The race to succeed two-term Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya remains to be one of the country's most unpredictable contests as the country heads towards a General Election on August 9.

So far the race has attracted seasoned politicians who have held significant political positions and new entrants as well.

The aspirants are drawn from different political parties including Amani National Congress (ANC), United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Among those eyeing the seat include Lugari MP Ayub Savula (DAP-K), current and former senators Cleophas Malala (ANC) and Boni Khalwale (UDA).

Others are former Cabinet Minister Amukowa Anangwe (ANC) Oparanya's deputy Philip Kutima and Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited CEO Fernandes Barasa.

In a Facebook poll by TUKO.co.ke to get voters' view on who among Khalwale and Malala who were among first candidates to declare interest in the gubernatorial seat, majority of netizens interested in the contest gave a divergent view.

Majority Facebook users argued that Malala and Khalwale did not match attributes of leading Kakamega as governors, citing different shortcomings.

"None of the above. They both lack management skills, they can only be senators, where they can " shout & cry " freely," Ricks Masinde commented.

Others suggested that Oparanya's shoe was too big for either Malala or Khalwale.

"Kakamega has to be the most unfortunate county in Kenya. Imagine after such a sober n well performing Governor in Oparanya you have to contend with Khalwale and Malala," Vique Meshie said.

Another netizen Julliet Fredo echoed Meshie's sentiments.

"I wish Oparanya could be given another term, because this man was a heaven sent, the great work he has done in Kakamega county he deserve another term," Fredo said.

Ric Obesi observed that the two contestants were unsuitable and proposed Kutima as a his best bet to take forward Oparanya's legacy.
