William Ruto Still Preferred Presidential Candidate at 38%, TIFA Survey Shows

A new poll has established that Deputy President William Ruto is still the preferred presidential candidate in the forthcoming August 9 General Election.

The survey conducted by Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) showed the second in command enjoys national support of about 38%.

According to the research findings released on Thursday, February 17, Ruto is followed closely by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga at 27%.

The researchers noted that the former premier's popularity rose after officially launching his presidential candidacy in December 2021.

"There was a steady decline in Odinga's rating between June 2020 and June 2021 (from 18% to 15%) but that has changed in the current survey that shows that Odinga's popularity has risen to 27%, the most recent increase being a reflection of the public launch of his candidacy on December 10, 2021," noted TIFA.

According to the survey, ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, who recently revived his working relationship with the Ruto, is his preferred running mate at 27%.

Mudavadi is followed by Governor Anne Waiguru at 15%, MP Rigathi Gachagua at 11%, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka at 8% and senator Irungu Kangata at 5%.

On the other hand, former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth is Raila's preferred running mate at 41%.

Kenneth is followed by Kalonzo at 18%, Martha Karua at 13%, Charity Ngilu at 5% and Peter Munya at 4%.

It is worth noting that Kalonzo has been adamant about joining Raila's Azimio la Umoja movement despite immense pressure from Ukambani governors, including Ngilu, Alfred Mutua and Kivutha Kibwana.
