Uhuru Kenyatta Signs Political Parties Amendment Bill into Law

The contentious Political Parties (Amendment) Bill of 2021 is now law after President Uhuru Kenyatta assented to it.

The head of state signed the bill into law at the State House, Nairobi when Deputy Chief of Staff Njee Muturi presented it to him on Thursday, January 27.

In attendance were; Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua, Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi and majority leaders Samuel Poghisio and Amos Kimunya.

The bill which was approved by National Assembly before being adopted by Senate on Wednesday, January 26, introduced the concept of coalition political parties.

It also outlined the functions of political parties as well as changed the criteria of accessing the Political Parties Fund.

Deputy President William Ruto-allied senators were left licking their wounds after their attempts to shoot down the bill failed.

The Azimio la Umoja team easily outnumbered Ruto's allies to see the bill through the second reading.

Despite a great effort by United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party leaning legislators who proposed 15 amendments to the bill, all were shot down.

Uhuru and ODM leader Raila Odinga had the last laugh after 29 senators voted to support the bill with only seven votes against it.

The handshake partners' wish was to have a law that would allow political parties to field candidates jointly across the country under a coalition party.
