Governor Joshua Irungu Pledges on Boosting Livestock Production

PROMOTE ADEQUATE AND QUALITY LIVESTOCK FODDER PRODUCTION

  • Recognize fodder as a value chain and develop relevant policy and strategies Undertake annual feed resources inventory in the county to inform investment in the fodder value chain.
  • Promote production of high yield and nutritious fodder varieties by farmers. Attract public private partnership for large scale fodder and feed production Establish County Animal Strategic Fodder Reserve.
  • Support effective post-harvest management practices of fodder Incentivize commercialization of fodder production by farmers.
  • Establish a social protection scheme to support pastoralist communities during drought through a targeted, unconditional, cash or cow transfer programme.
  • Increase pastures in the rangelands through conservation and rehabilitation of landscapes and implementation of technologies for reclaiming land from invasive species, reseeding of the rangelands with suitable drought tolerant fodder and forage, soil erosion management.
  • Facilitate pastoral communities in development of ecosystem management plan and grazing plans and implementation of the same particularly in Laikipia North.
