Governor Joshua Irungu Pledges on Boosting Livestock

INITIATE LIVESTOCK BREED IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMME

  • Partner with the National Government to establish a livestock TVET, a breed improvement programme and feedlot system for beef production in Mutara ADC Farm.
  • Subsidize artificial insemination services.
  • Establish livestock disease prevention and control programs e.g vaccination and treatment programmes.
  • Train livestock farmers on modern animal husbandry to increase productivity.
  • Subsidize animal management tools e.g. animal drugs, castration forceps, hoof pincer, bloat trocar, hoof trimming knives.
  • Construct dams and water pans to harvest ground water for livestock Establish a livestock insurance scheme.

VALUE ADDITION AND PROCESSING

  • Invest in value addition and processing of meat and other livestock products e.g. by setting up a tannery factory.
  • Train livestock associations with business training, access to finance, access to information and market linkages.
  • Establish a mini meat processing and marketing facility in partnership with Kenya Meat Commission to take advantage of the livestock potential in the surrounding counties.
  • Collaborate with the Kenya Meat Commission and support the offtake program during dry season.
