Governor Joshua Irungu Promises on Energy

PROMOTE ADOPTION OF RENEWABLE ENERGY BY HOUSEHOLD & SMES

1.SOLAR AND WIND ENERGY

  • Provide incentives for communities to adopt clean cooking technologies such as biogas and biomass cook stove.
  • Initiate a subsidy to incentivize communities to adopt biogas for household energy needs. Promote the use of biogas for SMEs to meet their energy needs.
  • Establish wind and solar energy farms to produce electricity for the cottage industry and food processing such as dairy, vegetables refrigeration centres and for small irrigation systems.
  • Install roof top solar lighting in hospitals, dispensaries, KMTC colleges, education institution and ICT lab e.g., schools and colleges, irrigation of horticultural crops, street lighting in residential areas, town and rural centres and along major roads, floodlights in stadiums.
  • Identify and develop sites for renewable energy such as solar and wind to power the industries.

2.STRENGTHEN THE ENABLING ENVIRONMENT

  • Provide incentives for private sector investment in renewable energy in the county.
  • Lobby REREC to allocate to Laikipia County its rightful share for Rural electrification programs including but not limited to e.g. KOSAP among other donor projects.
  • Provide an enabling legal and policy framework for the efficient and sustainable production, distribution and marketing of alternative sources of energy
