Governor Wavinya Ndeti Promises On Pledges Food Security

My vision on food security is improved crop and animal husbandry in Machakos County to cater for both domestic and commercial purposes My Commitment on Food Security is to: 

  • Make fertilizer and other critical inputs available and affordable to farmers
  • Improve access to agricultural credit from financial institutions, SACCOs including engaging insurance companies to insure agricultural activities
  • Initiate and support community-based peer review mechanisms for purposes of promoting agricultural best practices
  • Initiate support mechanisms for the formation of ecologically friendly agriculture-based SMEs at cooperative or farm-levels for products like honey, fruits, milk among others
  • Organize education and training fora on crop diversification, technology adoption and application, climate friendly agriculture among other sustainable modern farming methods.
  • Improve infrastructure and access to markets and market information through capacity building and establishment of local, national and international partnerships
  • Work with National government, other stakeholders and partners to facilitate product aggregation and build food reserves at strategic points in the county
  • Establish networks with institutions such as KARI, Ford Foundation and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to provide support for extension services and capacity building in agriculture
  • Secure contract farming arrangements for farmers of crops such as sunflower, sorghum, and millet among others
  • Tackle climate change by supporting individual and community initiatives to conserve environment for sustainable development.
  • Construct dams, gabions on major streams and water pans at strategic points to harvest rain water. These among other county initiatives will be supported by leasing county equipment to Mwananchi at an affordable fee to develop private boreholes or earth dams.
