Mandate

The mandate of the department is to promote, conserve and protect the environment under the following sub sectors;

  • Solid Waste Management and Pollution Control
  • Disaster Management and Fire Rescue Services
  • Natural Resource Management
    • Mining services
    • Sand harvesting
  • Climate Change, Adaptation and Mitigation
  • Forestry conservation and development

Functions

  • Refuse removal, refuse dumps and solid waste disposal
  • Control of air pollution, noise pollution and public nuisance
  • Implementation of specific National Government policies on natural resources and environmental conservation including;
    • Soil and water conservation
    • Forestry
    • Climate change adaptation and mitigation as provided for in Climate Change Act 2016
  • Fire-fighting services and disaster management
