Senator Ledama Declares Support for Political Parties Amendment Bill: "It'll Cement Coalition Agreements"

Narok county Senator Ledama Olekina has declared his support for the Political Parties Amendment Bill, which will pave the way for the formation of a coalition party.

Olekina said the Bill was good for Kenya and that he could not wait to pass it once it is tabled at the National Assembly. Sharing his sentiments on his Twitter handle, the senator said the Political Parties Amendment Bill would cement coalitions agreement.

"The Political Parties Amendment Bill is good for Kenya, I can’t wait to debate and Pass It!" he tweeted.

When he sponsored the Bill, some of the clauses that Amos Kimunya sought to amend included Clause 8, which sets the timeframe for coalition formation.

The Bill had proposed at least six months before the August polls, but he sought to reduce it to at least four months. That particular clause of coalition formation has been interpreted as part of plans by President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga to allow the registration of Azimio la Umoja Movement as a coalition and clear the way for it to field candidates in the August polls.
