Kiambu Senator initiates community project to help small farmers

    Kiambu County Senator Kimani Wamatangi has started a community project to help small scale farmers engage in good farming practices, improve yields and source markets for their produce.The project, titled Wamatangi farming solutions, is a partnership between the senator’s Wamatangi Foundation, Equity Bank, tanks manufacturer Kentainers, Kenya National Federation of Farmers (Kenaff), a biogas firm among other key market players.
    Mr Wamatangi said demonstration units for the project have already been set up at Kibichoi in Githunguri and Ngecha in Limuru where the official launch will take place.Part of the assistance that farmers will get is the provision of affordable loans and training to enable the farmers engage in good farming practices, ensure diversified and increased incomes and savings.Sixty per cent of Kiambu people are small scale farmers depending on agriculture as their source of sustenance.The project will have a transformation effect on the yields that farmers get and give them huge savings and value for money.The project was aimed at ensuring that mixed farming (dairy and crops – including cash crops) remains a key pillar of the county’s economy.
    The lawmaker said there was need to introduce new innovations to support Kenyans to engage in new farming technologies, business and trade as well as improve both youth and women empowerment programmes.The projected will be a part of the Wamatangi Foundation, a charity founded in 2006.
