Kakamega: Wycliffe Oparanya's Succession Gathers Steam, Voters Say He’ll Leave Big Shoes to Fill

With less than six months to the General Election, the race to succeed Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya continues to shape up.

Already, several candidates have shown interest in replacing the incumbent whose term expires in August.

According to most locals in the county, the outgoing governor has set high standards in development during his two terms in office that many fear his successor will struggle to replicate.

Among the major development projects that the ODM deputy party leader has done include the building of a level six hospital with a 750 bed capacity at a cost of KSh 10 billion.

According to Oparanya, the hospital is expected to boost health services in the county whilst minimizing the cost of accessing treatment.

“This is something that will benefit many for a very long time, in the past we have struggled in treatment of cancer patients through referrals but once equipped this facility will put an end to it, we are also using it as a training center for doctors,’’ Oparanya said in a previous function.

The county-level six hospitals are expected to play host to a contingent of Indian doctors specialized in cancer treatment and management who are expected to train Kenyan doctors from various counties on the treatment of the disease.

Political analysts also believe that the tarmacking of more than 200 km in the 12 sub-counties that Oparanya embarked on has earned him respect among the electorates.

Among those who have shown interest in the top seat of the county seat include Kakamega Deputy Governor Philip Kutima, Fernandes Barasa the Kenya Electricity Transmission company Chief Executive Officer, former Ikolomani mp dr Boni Khalwale, County assembly clerk Laban Atemba former Butere lawmaker Amukoya Anangwe among others.
