Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero Ordered to Pay over KSh 400m

The High Court has ordered former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero to pay over KSh 400 million in taxes to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

This is after the Homa Bay gubernatorial aspirant failed to prove the money was raised and used for political campaigns.

In a ruling delivered by Justice David Majanja of the High Court, KRA was allowed to collect tax amounting to KSh.427,269,795 from the politician.

This comes following an audit by the Commissioner for Domestic Taxes (DTD) on his financial and business affairs.

The decision is a blow to Kidero who had reached a consensus with the Commissioner that monied raised for political campaigns are not taxable. Kidero's case took a turn for the worst when he failed to demonstrate that the funds he raised had actually been used for campaigns.
