The National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) is a prominent political party and former ruling alliance in Kenya that fundamentally altered the country's political landscape. Formed in 2002, it is best known for bringing an end to the 39-year uninterrupted rule of the Kenya African National Union (KANU). 🗳️ The 2002 Historic Victory In preparation for the 2002 general elections, major opposition groups united to form NARC. The alliance primarily brought together: The National Alliance of Kenya (NAK): Led by Mwai Kibaki, Charity Ngilu, and Wamalwa Kijana. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP): Led by Raila Odinga, who broke away from KANU. On 27 December 2002, NARC secured a landslide victory. Its presidential candidate, Mwai Kibaki, won 62% of the vote against KANU’s Uhuru Kenyatta, who received 31%. This milestone marked Kenya's first democratic transition of power from a long-ruling regime.
